City can help you replace sidewalks

The City of Montezuma has matching funds available to help property owners repair and replace sidewalks.

In residential areas, the sidewalks must be located within the street right of way. In the business district the sidewalks may be against the property line.

Reimbursement will be up to $10 per lineal foot.

Property owners may do their own work or get a contractor to do it for them.

Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

A sidewalk replacement request form must be filled out prior to the sidewalk replacement project. It's a simple, one-page form available at City Hall, located at 501 East Main Street. You may call City Hall with questions at 623-5617.

The primary purpose of the subsidized Sidewalk Repair Program is to assist property owners in the repair of displaced and damaged sidewalks by providing partial reimbursement of costs.

Applicatons are processed on a first come first served basis until funds allocated for the year have been expended.

A. GENERAL

   REIMBURSEMENT: Property owners will only be reminbursed upon completion of the approved work and final inspection and presentation of paid receipts if the work is being done by a contractor. All sidewalks shall be repaired and reconstructed in accordance with the provisions of City Ordinances and these Specifications. Any sidewalk NOT repaired and reconstructed in compliance with specifications will not be eligible for reimbursement and may be required to be removed at the contractor's or owner's expense.

   PUBLIC PROTECTION: The Contractor/Owner shall, at all times during the process of repair and construction, protect the public from injury by the use of necessary warning signs, barricades or lights as required by the City Street Supertintendent. All Contractors shall have adequate liability insurance.

   LOCATON: In residential areas, all sidewalks eligible for reimbursement shall be located within the Street Right of Way. In the Business District a sidewalk may be against the property line.

   LENGTH AND WIDTH: All sidewalks in residential areas shall be a minimum of four (4) feet in width; provided that replacement of walks shall conform to the existing width. Each section shall be no more than four (4) feet in length. Business sidewalks shall conform to the existing widths.

B. SIDEWALKS TYPES AND CONSTRUCTION

   TYPES:

   TYPE 1: For localized repairs, the same type of materials shall be used as the surrounding existing sidewalk. For "localized repair" the maximum area must be less than 50 percent of the total sidewalk area.

   TYPE 2: SINGLE COURSE POURED CONCRETE

   THICKNESS

   a. Residential Sidewalks - The thickness of the concrete in residential areas shall be a a minimum of four (4) inches thick, reinforced with 3/8-inch rebar, except where such sidewalk will cross a driveway it shall be a minimum of six (6) inches thick with 3/8-inch rebar.

   b. Business District - The thickness of the concrete in the Business District shall be a minimum of six (6) inches thick. In areas where there is a driveway or delivery area where there is a possibility of vehicles over the sidewalks there shall be installed 3/8-inch rebar.

   SLOPE - All sidewalks shall slope toward the curb 1/4 inches per foot of sidewalks width. This requirement may be waived by the Street Supertintendent if the surrounding sidewalks or the elevation of the existing curbing makes it prohibitive.

   FORMS - Forms shall extend for the full depth of the concrete. All forms shall be straight and free from warp and of sufficient strength to resist the pressure of the concrete without springing.

   CONCRETE TYPE - The construction shall be single course Class A Portland Cement Concrete.

   EXPANSION JOINTS - Expansion joints of 1/2-inch premoulded joint filler shall be placed in all sidewalks to the full depth of the concrete at intervals of not more than sixty (60) feet.

   FINISHING - All sidewalks shall be broom finished or wood float finished.

   MAXIMUM REIMBURSEABLE LENGTH OF SIDEWALK - The maximum length of sidewalk eligible for remibursement is 132 feet per property. The maximum allowed price for removal and replacement of sidewalk is $20.00 per lineal foot. The City will reimburse property owners up to $10.00 per lineal foot.
