City may try for more housing improvement funding

The City of Montezuma is considering applying for grant funds to continue the Montezuma Owner Occupied Housing Improvement Program. Sufficient household housing improvement participation is necessary to submit a competitive application.

To date, this program has assisted nine homeowners with improvements totaling $232,912. Typical improvements include roof, window and siding replacements, electrical system upgrades, insulation and painting.

Each qualified household is eligible to receive up to $24,999 of repair assistance. There is no guarantee that funds will be awarded for this project.

The maximum annual income levels to qualify for assistance are listed below:

1 person     $32,100

2 persons    $36,700

3 persons    $41,250

4 persons    $45,850

5 persons    $49,500

6 persons    $53,200

7 persons    $56,850

8 persons    $60,500

This funding described above is only available for existing homeowners. Rental properties are not eligible for this program, but may qualify for other funds.

If you are interested in participating in the program, please contact Mike Wentzien at Region 6 Planning Commission, 905 East Main St., Marshalltown, Iowa 50158 or by phone at 1-800-417-4699 by Sept. 19, 2008. If this project is funded, you will be contacted again in the spring/summer of 2009.

Band and choir being organized
A group of citizens is attempting to form a community band and a community choir in Montezuma. "Casual and fun," a news release advises. "In the spirit of a can-do community, let's form a community band and a community choir. We might not have a bubble machine (ala Lawrence Welk), but we sure can put together a band. Join up! The more the merrier." For more information, call 623-5617, 623-8202, or e-mail monteclerk@zumatel.net.
