Montezuma!
Montezuma is a real place with real people.
In a way, this central Iowa community is a trip back in time.
Neighbors still practice the art of being neighbors here.
From Victorian homes to simple frame houses, from tree-lined streets to homes with a view of beautiful Lake Ponderosa or peaceful Lake Silverado, Montezuma looks like home . . . and it is!
The community lies amidst rich farmland, but is shoreline for several lakes. Water is abundant and provides recreational opportunities 12 months of the year, making Montezuma Iowa’s town for all seasons.
You’ll see residents and visitors out hunting, camping, fishing, skiing or golfing.
You can play basketball on lighted courts, or walk, jog or bicycle on local trails.
You can practice your shooting.
You can bowl. You can play racquetball. Or, you can do skateboarding at our new skateboard park.
There is a fitness center for weight training and a church-operated family center that many in the community use for recreational activities.
Montezuma is home to small industries and is close to major employers in surrounding towns.
Residents are focused on what’s going on in the school and in the churches.
Large cities are just an hour away – and the roads run both ways.
Montezuma, the seat of Poweshiek County, was founded in 1848.
It’s unpretentious and laid-back. It’s commerce and country living at Iowa’s finest.
Montezuma is in east central Iowa, at the junction of U.S. Highway 63 and Iowa Highway 85. It’s just eight miles south of Interstate 80 at exit 191.
Montezuma’s business community, centered around the courthouse square and lining U.S. Highway 63, is thriving and varied.
Two of the fastest-disappearing businesses from America’s small towns are soda fountains and home-owned pharmacies. We have them both!
From furniture to hardware, from fabrics to flowers, from photos to gifts, you can get it here.
Montezuma offers a medical clinic, chiropractic and dental care and massage therapy. There are a bevy of hair salons and a variety of good places to eat – and a full-service supermarket!
There’s even an espreso coffee house run by our high school students!
What you’ll really appreciate about Montezuma is its convenience and its service. After all, we’re friends helping neighbors.
