If you run into an emergency situation – anywhere – it’s comforting to know that help is immediately available.
Montezuma residents are proud of their emergency services, which includes the Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department and Montezuma Ambulance.
Police protection is provided by the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office.
Fire Department & Ambulance
The fire department has a staff of 30 volunteers. Of those, 21 are trained as First Responders, meaning they’re qualified to give first aid, and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), who are trained to provide more advanced care.
Fire Department equipment includes two pumpers, two rescue tankers, one regular tanker, an equipment truck and a 4x4 brush truck.
There are two fully-equipped ambulances, each with a defibrillator.
Emergency calls are handled by the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office through the E-911 system. Calls are immediately routed to pagers worn by the department’s emergency crews.
Fire department and ambulance crew members attend continuing education classes on an ongoing basis.
The department has a number of fund-raisers which helps to increase its visibility and rapport in the community. Department members also provide educational programs about fire safety to children and family members.
The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office has provided law enforcement services to Montezuma since 2002. The staff, in addition to the sheriff, includes 11 deputies and seven reserve deputies, seven dispatchers, a dispatcher supervisor, a jail administrator and a canine unit.

Poweshiek County Emergency Management Agency provides help in the event of a disaster. Services include coordinating efforts from the state and federal levels.
