Economic development . . .
Location, location, yes, a great central location!
Add progressive city-owned utilities and a home-grown business community that is anxious to serve and you have Montezuma, a community in east central Iowa that is poised to grow into the 21st century.
The City of Montezuma, the Montezuma Community Boosters and the Montezuma Improvement Association have linked talents and resources to help fuel the community’s growth.
This is one of eight city-owned generators
which can produce up to twice Montezuma's
average daily electrical usage.
Montezuma has long maintained its independence. Don Fahlenkamp, who manages Montezuma Municipal Light and Power, has helped to make sure of that.
The city purchases power from MidAmerican Energy, but has kept its own turbines in perfect working order. That has proven helpful during times of peak usage, and invaluable during two major ice storms that struck east central Iowa during 2007.
During both storms, power stayed on in Montezuma, although it was out in adjacent areas. It’s particularly important that the city’s emergency services and high-end corporate users won’t have to experience down time because of an outage.
Fahlenkamp says the city keeps enough fuel on hand to run the local generators for up to one month.
Montezuma also has municipally-owned natural gas, water and sewage systems.
The gas system, installed in 1967, is designed to handle continued growth.
The water plant treats a virtually unlimited supply of water from nearby Diamond Lake, a city-built project that was designed to handle expanding water needs.

This is another one of eight city-owned
generators which can produce up to twice
Montezuma's average daily electrical usage.
This organization of volunteers functions similar to a chamber of commerce. The group meets monthly and promotes several events designed to promote family fun and visits to the community by residents of the region.
